Wild carrots
10th century, Persia
The earliest known carrots were grown in the 10th century in Persia and Asia Minor. Originally, they were purple or white, very thin, and had a very distinct, powerful flavour, with forked roots. Wild carrots were biennial plants, meaning they took two years to complete their biological cycle.
Farmers domesticated them to reduce their bitterness and increase their sweeterness and size. Now, they are an annual winter crop.
